Brendan Mason | Designer

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AND HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?

I received my Bachelor of Art's in Architecture from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and then went on to receive my Master's of Architecture from the University of Michigan. I started my professional career designing stadiums, arenas, and sports facilities for the largest architectural firm in the world, based in their DC office, but wanted to do more. I started designing cabinets in Virginia and fell in love with the process and the personal connection I was able to make with my clients that ultimately was reflected in each design. One of my greatest memories growing up was spending time with my grandfather in his woodshop on his farm in rural Upstate New York. I used to sit for hours in the barn coming up with designs in crayon and then working with my grandfather to make the design come to life, and I am so grateful that I get to spend every day doing something that reminds me of my time with him.

WHAT’S ONE THING THAT YOU THINK PEOPLE GET WRONG ABOUT KITCHEN DESIGN?

“A kitchen is just a place where you cook.” In many families, including my own, the kitchen is where everyone sits and talks in the morning or at the end of a long day, it’s where the kids do homework and the parents finish up work. It’s where you entertain guests and conduct family meetings. The kitchen is the heart of the home and should be designed to reflect what makes your house a home.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN STYLE? WHAT INSPIRES YOUR DESIGNS?

Clean and classic. There are some things that never go out of style. But, I think the “same old kitchen” is out of style. What inspires me to create new and exciting spaces is people. I love getting to know individuals and learning how they use a space, so that I can create a design that works seamlessly with them.

WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF KITCHEN DESIGN?

I love to stay active – whether it’s hitting the gym, going on walks with my wife and our goldendoodle, Finn, or playing golf and soccer. We also love cooking and trying new recipes, as well as exploring new restaurants, and I am determined to find the best cheeseburger in Sarasota.

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?

“Never settle for less.” It’s a principle I carry into my work and my relationships. I believe in designing to the highest standards, surrounding myself with great people, and creating spaces that reflect my commitment to excellence.
